Iraq’s parliament has confirmed Jabbar al-Luaibi as the country’s new oil minister, as part of a cabinet shake-up that breaks the political deadlock that has paralysed the Baghdad government. The parliament in April rejected ministerial candidates put forward by prime minister Haider al-Abadi as part of a drive to tackle corruption. Al-Luaibi headed Iraq’s main state-owned oil firm South Oil-now Basrah Oil-from 2003-08.
