UN commission ruling reopens south Atlantic row

The UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) has recognised Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over seas in the south Atlantic that include the UK-controlled Falkland islands (Islas Malvinas). A number of London-listed oil firms are preparing to develop offshore discoveries in the area. The commission’s declaration “reaffirms our sovereign rights over the resources of our continental shelf-mineral, hydrocarbon, fishery”, Argentina’s foreign minister, Susana Malcorra, says.
