Japan targets LNG hub role

Japan wants to become a regional LNG hub, in an effort to support importers that remain exposed to uncertain demand as the country’s future energy mix targets increasingly look unrealistic. Trade and industry minister Motoo Hayashi promoted his country as Asia’s future LNG hub during a 1-2 May G7 energy ministerial meeting at Kitakyushu in southern Japan, presenting a programme to achieve this goal over the next decade. The G7 ministers agreed to co-ordinate their efforts to ensure market transparency along with other measures in pursuit of global natural gas supply security.
