Giving Psychological Science Away

The applicability of basic research in psycho-logical science is obvious to those in the field, but too oftenunderappreciated outside of it. In this article, I suggestsome reasons for that gap, including confusion between therelevance of psychological science and its actual applica-tion, which can lead to hype; the interdisciplinary na-ture of applied science, which can obscure the credit due tothe field; and the considerable difficulty of moving basicresearch into application, including the potential for re-sistance to the products we deliver. I suggest that our ownstudents constitute a relatively underutilized audience fordemonstrating that psychological science has been criticalto applications, and I describe an applied cognitive sciencecourse that is intended to make the case to them.
