Public mental health commissioning guidance: Embedding mental health in local public health work

Public mental health is highlighted in recent UK government public health and mental health policy, with the public health white paper signalling a new approach that places mental health and wellbeing 'at the heart' of the new system, and highlighting the key role of Directors of Public Health in public mental health. In December 2012, the Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health (JCPMH), chaired by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of General Practitioners, published public mental health commissioning guidance outlining the broad impacts of mental disorder and wellbeing, associated risks and protective factors, interventions to prevent mental disorder and promote mental health, and their associated impacts. It highlights that both public mental health intelligence and interventions have an important role in an effective public health system.
