Apsheron boosts Azeri gas plans

The prospect of Azerbaijan becoming a significant supplier of gas to Europe is starting to look a lot likelier, after many years of deliberation. Total announced this week that its gas discovery at the Apsheron project in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea is commercial, marking the latest in a run of positive developments for Azeri gas plans. The news confirms Apsheron as Azerbaijan's next big gas project after the second phase of the BP-led Shakh Deniz, due on stream around 2018. The Apsheron consortium unites Total and Azeri state-owned Socar with 40pc each, while France's GDF Suez holds 20pc.
