Erbil takes the initiative

Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is seek- ing to ease escalating tensions with Baghdad by restart- ing crude exports from the northern enclave. The conciliatory move comes at the same time as the KRG is attracting growing investment from majors and other large oil firms (see box below). But Erbil’s surprise export move follows heightening tensions with Baghdad.
