Angola faces challenges

Angolan president Jose Eduardo dos Santos has extended his 33-year rule in sub-Saharan Africa’s secon largest oil exporter, and is expected to oversee upstream gains but downstream challenges. The ruling MPLA party won over 70pc of the national vote in legislative elections on 31 August, according to the country’s election commission. The MPLA, which secured 82pc of the vote in 2008 elections, chose dos Santos as president, and former chairman of state-owned oil firm Sonangol Manuel Vicente as vice-president.
