Introduction to the Special Issue From Philosophical Thinking to Psychological Empiricism

Psychology owes an intellectual debt to philosophy. The ob-jective of this special issue is to pay back some of this debt in aseries of articles, to be presented in the January and March is-,sues of Perspectives on Psychological Science. The authors ofthese articles received a rather tall order. They were requested to(a) identify an important, broad, and vibrant topic in their area ofexpertise; (b) trace historically the foundations of this topic to philosophers (and, if needed, to thinkers in other fields such as sociology, politics, or economics); (c) cover briefly how knowl-edge on this topic progressed to the present; (d) provide anoverview of psychology's contribution by explaining how psy-chology has framed ideas about this topic and how empirical research has provided answers; and (e) identify new questions for this topic and highlight how psychological research is likelyto shape them new questions. The result was 17 articles on suchdiverse topics as infant perception, the unconscious mind,language, persuasion, self-esteem, ideology, happiness,schizophrenia, free will, affect and cognition, love, heuristics,self-enhancement, wisdom, and war and peace.
