Iran faces winter gas shortfall

Iran faces a growing gas supply deficit this winter as it struggles to tap the world’s largest conventional gas reserves through key projects delayed by US and EU sanctions. Iran claims the world’s largest conventional gas reserves at 1,187 trillion ft3 (33 trillion m3). Iranian gas demand is equivalent to its production of around 160bn m3/yr, but delays in bringing new supply on stream mean that the government has to prioritise supply to the residential sector during the peak winter demand season.
