Petrobras hopes for post-election reprieve

It is still unclear whether the political storm that has engulfed Brazil’s state-controlled Petrobras will blow over after the 26 October presidential election. Securities regulator CVM is the latest federal agency to open an investigation into the company in the days before the hotly contested run-off between incumbent President Dilma Rousseff of the workers party (PT) and her centreright rival Aecio Neves of the social democracy party (PSDB). The CVM did not disclose the nature of the probe, but it is probably linked to the corruption allegations detailed in a plea deal by former Petrobras downstream director Paulo Roberto Costa - under house arrest on separate corruption charges (WPA, 12 September, p6).
