India initiates energy sector reforms

India’s new BJP government has finally revealed measures to accelerate reform of the oil, gas and coal sectors. Election victories in Maharashtra and Haryana states - following a number of losses in recent state elections - emboldened prime minister Narendra Modi’s government to remove price controls on diesel and raise natural gas prices. The government also launched reform of the state-controlled coal sector, allowing private-sector entry.
