Improved Taste/Smell Solutions to Drive Functional Food Growth

Technologies for the improvement of taste and smell in functional foods and beverages are among the key research needs in the category, according to a new PricewaterhouseCoopers report.a The study concludes that beverages will continue to lead the global functional market, posting an 8.5% annual growth through 2013. PricewaterhouseCoopers adds that beverages are a natural fit for new offerings as they are 1) convenient, 2) versatile and 3) relatively easy to formulate palatably. The report states that energy will continue to be the leading benefit among launches, growing at 6.1% per year. Other leading benefits include heart health, bone health and gut health. In terms of food categories, soft drinks--particularly enhanced waters and sports drinks-and dairy lead the functional market overall.
