The boy has a history of premature birth, asthma, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. His neonatal course was significant for surgical necrotizing enterocolitis leading to an ileostomy, which has since been taken down. He lives at home with his mother and his mother's friend. His father is incarcerated. When his mother arrives in the ED, she denies that there are any medications that he might have gotten into in the household. The family history is only significant for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. The patient's only prescribed medication is albuterol, as needed; and his immunizations are up to date.
