In 2000, measles was declared eliminated in the United States thanks to a high level of immunity achieved by routine receipt of 2 doses of a highly effective measles vaccine. As a result of this success, many clinicians have -never seen a case of measles. In 2014, however, 644 measles cases were reported in the U.S., the most in more than two decades, and at press time 170 cases already had been reported in 2015. It is believed the index case in the current outbreak was an international traveler. The majority of cases had no documentation of receipt of measles vaccine.
