Retropharyngeal abscess with extension toward the mediastinum

An 8-month-old boy presented to an outside hospital with 4 days of fever, drooling, decreased cervical motion, and neck swelling. He was given intravenously administered ceftriaxone and clindamycin for suspected retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) before transfer to our institution. He had no prior significant medical history, and his physical examination upon arrival corroborated the referring hospital's findings.
