Twig girdlers frustrate homeowners, commercial producers

I have received several calls and emails this fall concerning twig girdler damage, so I thought this would be an appropriate topic for this month's column. In my ever-growing list of insects that feed on pecan, which now stands at 191, I have recorded63 species that feed in the main trunk, branches, twigs and roots. Of these 63 species, 32 are in the order Coleoptera (beetles) with most of these in the family Cerambycidae (roundheaded borers). Of all the Cerambycids that feed on pecan, I receive more calls on twig girdler [Oncideres cingulata (Say)] damage than any other.
