Lessons learned from '07 Easter freeze

Each new season brings another opportunity for us to learn something new about native pecan groves. A year ago, the Easter freeze allowed us to measure the reaction of native trees to losing their initial flush of new growth to cold injury. After 3 days of low temperatures that hovered around 20 degrees F, we found that any bud that had even started to swell was killed by the freezing temperatures. Which buds would break when the tree resumed growth and would any of these new growing points be able to produce flowers?
