SEPGA: challenges, opportunities abound for pecans

The Southeastern Pecan Growers Association's annual meeting in Biloxi came at the end of an interesting pecan season and was the setting for numerous discussions regarding both the most recent crop and the upcoming crop. The prevailing mood seemed tobe that the stage is set for potentially major adjustments in the industry. For the most part, southeastern pecan growers enjoyed a bountiful 07/08 crop — several individuals even offered a suggestion that it was at least near a record high production for Georgia. In light of that, most of the Southeast is gearing up for a smaller crop and growers were urged by program participants to be smart managers, not wasting money on excess inputs but at the same time making every effort to protect what is likely to be significantly decreased production compared to last year. Skyrocketing fuel and fertilizer costs are additional factors that mandate efficient management.
