The critical evaluation of the article by Dullenkopf et al. (1) in the comprehensive editorial by Goldstein (2) is much appreciated by those in the field of near-infrared (NIR) tissue Po_2 studies and, indeed, the criticism is justified; the NIRO-300 represents a class of NIR instruments that are incapable of separating the two main factors that control the progress of light through tissue, scattering, and absorption.
