Ten, 20 and 30 years ago, it was easy to obtain pecan graftwood for the best or newest varieties. Not today — getting graftwood can be difficult. In the old days, Hugo Pape had an annual graftwood collection field day at his orchard in Seguin, Texas.Growers would come from far and near to collect graftwood of the newest varieties from his young, fast-growing trees. Thurman Gibson at Palestine, Texas, Charlie Mize at San Antonio, Floyd Gage at Brown-wood, Texas, and Leroy Fritz at Brenham, Texas, for years would collect, store and sell graftwood, but not any more. It is hard to find anyone who has the newest recommended varieties on young, fast-growing trees who are willing to do the work for others.
