摘要

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is an integral and innovative support technology for the repair of complex congenital heart defects. Although recognized as one of the major medical innovations of the last century, CPB produces a profound systemic inflammatory response producing damaging effects on virtually all organ systems of the body (1, 2). Since the introduction of CPB, major efforts have been put forth to moderate these deleterious effects. Through efforts of many investigators and thought leaders, progress has been made, outcomes have improved, and end-organ damage reduced, yet concerns persist (1, 2).
