Part 2 of 2 Pecan Culture — observations and uncertainties, from 25+ years

Cultivar Observations: Most pecan-producing states have a list of recommended cultivars. As a pecan producer and graft wood (scion wood) supplier for 25+ years, and a USDA-ARS Cooperator, I will share some of my personal observations. Based on graft wood demand, 'Pawnee' and 'Kanza' have been the 2 most popular cultivars within Oklahoma and adjacent states. 'Pawnee' has very early shuck split for a cultivar with large nut size; however, it has only mediocre disease resistance. 'Kanza' has excellent disease resistance, but nuts are somewhat small for some consumers. It is, however, my personal favorite as a nut for eating.
