Soft drinks packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles have a long history of failure by stress cracking, Ecolab Inc. recently studied the influence of environmental factors on stress cracking by evaluating the various failure rate data for different sets of bottles stored in shallow puddles of aqueous solutions. Further analysis revealed that humidity and water alkalinity greatly affected bottle failure.
