New Kevlar Stops Bullets Faster

DuPont Co. has unveiled a new aramid technology, Kevlar XP, which consistently stops bullets within the first three layers of an 11-layer bulletproof vest. DuPont claims its 11-layer design uses fewer layers than other lightweight technologies. According to DuPont global business director Dale Outhous, a typical vest would need nine of its 20 to 40 layers to stop the same bullet. Moreover, Kevlar XP reduces backface deformation by 15 percent in a 100 percent Kevlar vest when faced with the most challenging National Institute of Justice (NIJ) level IIIA threat, a .44 magnum bullet. The XP vest also provides excellent layer-to-layer abrasion resistance.
