Spirit AeroSystems Inc. has signed a contract to design and manufacture a major section of the composite fuselage for the new Airbus A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) program. The Section 15 center fuselage frame is 65 feet long by 20 feet wide and weighs nearly 9000 pounds. Spirit also makes the nose and forward fuselage for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The company plans to manufacture the fuselage at a new, grassroots facility near Kinston, NC. "Investing in additional facilities at this time assures we will be competitive and will be able to retain our position as a top Tier 1 supplier to Airbus and other, aerospace companies around the world," says Spirit president/CEO Jeff Turner.
