A Thorough Introduction to the Finnish Mires in Two Illustrative Volumes

The book consists of a preface and 27 independent articles on different topics dealing with Finnish mires. The number of authors is 29. Each one is an indisputable expert in his/her own special field (e.g. geology, geography, hydrology, limnology, botany, nature conservation and even in linguistics). The articles describing the bedrock, landforms, climate, and water systems give reasonable background information, which is necessary when trying to understand the initiation and development of mire ecosystems and peat formation in Finland. However, it is a pity that information on the development of peat deposits is restricted only to the height "increment" (p. 89-93), since results of studies concerning peat and carbon accumulation rates during different time periods following the last glacial period in different parts of the country are also available (e.g. Turunen 2003).
