New Scientific Journal on the Internet: Mires and Peat Welcomes its Readers

The journal, which began publication in January 2006, arises from the developing dialogue between the International Peat Society (IPS) and the International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG). It is a specific outcome of the joint meeting in Valencia (November 2002), which first identified a significant overlap of interest between the two organisations in publishing high-quality research on all aspects of mires, peatlands and peat. As a result, Olivia Bragg was appointed as the first Editor of a new joint publication, which has been developed in close collaboration with Jack Rieley (Deputy Editor) and Michael Trepel (Web Administrator). Mires and Peat is conspicuously linked to the IPS home page, and now welcomes all IPS members as readers and potential authors. For IPS, this is the start of an exciting new chapter in a long-standing commitment to the promotion and dissemination of research. The International Peat Journal (IPJ), until recently the Society's 'flagship' publication for scientific and technical papers relating to the fields of the IPS Commissions, was launched 20 years ago and ran to 12 issues under the editorship of Allan Robertson (1986-1996) and Jack Rieley (1996-2004). Throughout this time, the IPJ was the only international journal focusing on peatlands, and it provided a vital line of communication especially for researchers who would otherwise find it very difficult to achieve international English-language exposure for their work.
