A good 100 people took up the invitation, including people from the peat industry, the local government, and friends and partners of Griendtsveen AG. The departure of Hermann Wasser will mean the end of an era for Griendtsveen AG. The secretary's family had been involved in the company almost since its founding in 1853. Four generations of the Wasser family have worked for Griendtsveen AG and their predecessors which is reflected in 180 years of service. In his speech, the chairman of Griendtsveen AG, Guus van Berckel, traced the history of the Wasser family and of peat production through these 180 years. At the same time he spoke about the life of Hermann Wasser's grandfather, who at the age of 12 had already worked in the moor and who later worked for Griendtsveen in England. He also referred to the varied history of peat as raw material.
