Tuning the Duratec

Jim Eshelby's superb Fiesta is just one example of the growing number of Fords with big-power Duratecs we're starting to see emerging. So just what can be done with this versatile engine? It's hard to believe, but the Duratec-HE is ten years old this year. That's right; Ford's 'global straight-four' first debuted here back in 2001, under the bonnet of the Mk3 Mondeo, and although those of us who got into Fords in the era when big-turbo Zetecs were making their mark still like to think of it as a 'new' engine, the Duratec has now come of age. During its time with us, the Duratec-HE hasn't featured in many performance models; in fact, the only performance-oriented Fords to feature the Duratec lump have been the Fiesta ST and the Focus Zetec-S. All that's about to change, though, as a turbocharged 'EcoBoost' engine based on the 2.0-litre Duratec is soon to feature under the bonnet of the Mk3 Focus ST.
