There are loads of clean Escort Cosworths out there, but not many that have the level of dedication and family commitment as Mark Barber's. For a company steeped in motorsport history, when it came to getting new competition cars up and running, especially rally versions, Ford was rather slow off the mark. The RS200 arrived too late to make a proper impact in Group B. And, as good as it was the Sierra XR4×4 was underpowered. Even the Sierra Cosworth 4×4 a very capable car! was always going to be too large and too heavy to threaten the front-runners. What was needed was a medium-sized, production-based car that was turbocharged and four-wheel drive. Cue the Escort Cosworth, brainchild of Stuart Turner. To cut a long story short, through the efforts of Turner, John Wheeler, and Mike Moreton, the Escort RS Cosworth entered production in 1992. Based on a Sierra Cosworth floorpan, topped off with a slightly modified Escort Mks bodyshell, powered by a Cosworth YBT, and blessed with four-wheel-drive, the Escort RS Cosworth was quite some machine. Great on the road and even better on the rally stages.
