After a decade of dominance in rallying, thanks largely to the highly acclaimed Mk2 Escort, Ford needed to develop a new car that would ensure its hard-earned reputation and dominance would continue. After a brief encounter with a rear-drive Fiesta, work began on a rear-wheel drive Mk3 Escort that would be known as the RS1700T. Key players were called in to assist with the project to ensure that despite a two-year break from major competition, on its return, Ford would still very much be at the forefront of rallysport.
