The use of insulin in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes: A philosophical difference from the use of insulin in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

As the cystic fibrosis (CF) community and the providers that care for CF patients are becoming increasingly aware of, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) has become the most common CF-related comorbidity, occurring in ~20% of adolescents and ~50% of adults with CF.1'2 The presence of diabetes in CF patients is associated with more severe cystic fibrosis transmem-brane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutations,3 and occurs more frequently in those with increased age, pancreatic insufficiency, previous coriicosteroid use, worse pulmonary function, liver dysfunction, and undernutrition.
