Corticosteroids and Complicated Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection

Lee et al.'s data provide ample stimulus for hypothesis testing studies which further examine the role of corticosteroids in the treatment of M. pneumoniae infection. Both the latter study and those cited by the authors, however, give evidence for a potential benefit of corticosteroids in acute severe pulmonary infection. In addition to respiratory infection, M. pneumoniae may be responsible for a wide variety of extra-respiratory manifestations. I report on the possible beneficial effect of high-dose corticosteroid in a patient with severe respiratory illness which was complicated by such protean manifestations.
