Serving the city of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, Christchurch Airport is the second busiest in New Zealand, having handling six million passengers in 2008. That figure puts it between the North Island's two main airports - Auckland with 13 million passengers and Wellington with 4.5 million. Forecasts for Christchurch indicate that passenger movements will be over eight million by 2014. Currently Christchurch Airport has a single terminal that consists of a domestic portion that is 60 years old and a larger international portion that is 20 years old. Both have been added to over the decades and for the domestic side a major upgrade is long overdue.
