From 16 July this year,landfill operators have been banned from co-disposing hazardous waste with other types of waste,and will be required to pre-treat it before disposal.As a result,the number of landfill operators able to accept hazardous waste has fallen sharply,from 240 to fewer than 15 sites remaining in England and none in Wales.This is set to result in a hike in disposal and associated haulage costs.The situation is likely to be similar in Scotland and Northern Ireland.The need to change waste management practice will be further compounded as a broader range of waste types will be reclassified as hazardous under European Hazardous Waste regulations,which will be implemented imminently.
