Over the last two decades, the processes, functions and structures of the aviation sector have undergone a profound transformation. The reason was that revenue from non-aviation activities grew disproportionately faster than aviation revenue. To this day, this has resulted mainly from fierce competition among airlines and the ensuing low airline profit margins. Constant pressure from the airlines to reduce the fees for using existing airport infrastructure caused airport operators to develop alternative sources of revenue and prof-itability.
