Communication in healthcare: Lessons from diversity

摘要

1. Introduction: From September 29 to October 2, 2013, clinicians, academics, and educators gathered in Montreal to share the latest advances in healthcare communication. This special issue of Patient Education and Counseling includes a subset of the most intriguing work discussed during the meeting. This year, the presented work focused on the themes of the value of communication in healthcare, the conceptualization and practice of shared decision-making, the influence of the broader context on healthcare communication, the role of communication skills in healthcare provider training, the phenomenon of inter-professional learning in the healthcare context, the exploration of communication outside of the more widely studied verbal realm, and the development and refinement of instruments to further communication research.
