As Coated Paper Prices Move Up, Price Gaps Open vs Lower Grades

In recent months we have seen nearly every printing paper grade move up in price, at least on a sequential-quarter basis. The major exception is newsprint, which continues to decline. As a result, the lower end of the printing paper spectrum - which competes with newsprint for some commercial jobs - is beginning to be less price-competitive. On the other hand, the more rapid upward movement of some high-end grades should keep producers of the less expensive products smiling for several more quarters.
