Tensile strength measurement involves loading a strip of paper axially until it breaks. Prior to the introduction of instruments to perform this test it entailed securing a strip of paper vertically from a top clamp, attaching a clamp to the bottom, then adding weights to the latter until the strip broke. It is the oldest of the strength tests that have been applied to paper, and is in many ways the most scientific. The first application dates from around the 1870s, and it is possible it could have been tried earlier still. The oldest instrumental version of this test involved securing a strip between two clamps, one stationary and the other moveable. The latter was made to move such that the strip was placed under tension until it failed.
