Quality the key issue facing the UK recovered paper sector

The achievement of quality standards is one of the key issues facing the UK recovered paper sector,said Liz Goodwin,MD of WRAP,at the recent Forum on The role of international markets in responsible materials recycling;'There is a need to ensure that the UK meets the requirements of domestic and overseas reprocessors.'Last year,4 million tonnes of recovered paper were exported-out of the 8.1 million tonnes recovered from the waste stream-mainly to China and Other Asm,figure 1;This year,exports to overseas recycling mills will,for the first time,exceed domestic usage;and,by 2015,export tonnage is expected to reach the 6 million tonne mark,as regulatory targets push the recovery rates up and Chinese demand soars to an estimated 45 million tonnes,from 19.6 million in 2006.
