Fundamental Research Symposium: Advances in Pulp and Paper Research 2013

The tetra-annual Fundamental Research Symposium is perhaps the most important of the international research conferences organised for the Paper Industry, since it invariably covers the widest possible range of subjects over the course of a week. This year the subjects spanned the flow of pulp suspensions, bonding and structure, strength, winding, and development of novel products - almost the whole of the paper production process. The articles - especially the review papers - are often viewed as seminal works in their field, and make key reading for any involved in the more technical aspects of paper manufacture. Highly noticeable this year was the inclusion of several papers on micro-fibrillated and nano-cellulose; materials which have gained increasing coverage in the scientific literature over the last four years. The set of abstracts alone would constitute a full ten pages in this journal; hence we have produced a short resume of each article instead.
