One of evolution's most foitunate accidents is that flowers have such a powerful appeal to human senses. Their form sends poets into raptures, their colours inspire artists and a large number of people are prone to dousing themselves in floral fragrances. But flowers didn't evolve to appeal to us. The only way to understand the biological basis of their beauty is to explore them through the sensory systems of the animals they evolved to attract-insects.
