Outcomes of elderly hip fracture patients in the Swiss healthcare system A survey prior to the implementation of DRGs and prior to the implementation of a geriatric fracture centre (GFC)

The aim of the study was outcome documentation after treatment of elderly patients for a hip fracture in the Swiss healthcare setting, prior to implementation of relevant changes such as the introduction of DRG's and the implementation of treatment protocols that are specific to elderly trauma patients and GFC's.Our results confirm previous reports, such as Cooper (1997), and outcomes in recent studies from different healthcare systems: Our patients had a one-year mortality rate of 22%o and 17% of pre-fracture community dwelling patients newly lived in a nursing home one year after the initial fracture.
