A series of new functional pendant-armSchiff base macrocyclic complexes have beensynthesized by template cyclocondensation betweensodium 4-substituted phenolate and N,N-bis(2-aminoethyl)-8-methylquinolinearnine andsubsequent in situ transmetallation by metalperchlorates. The reaction products of thecorresponding Mn~(2+), Cd~(2+), Ni~(2+) and Zn~(2+)complexes have been characterized by elementalanalyses, infrared and ES-MS spectra. The magneticmoments of the dinuclear Mn(II) and Ni(II) complexesat room temperature suggest some antiferromagneticinteractions in these compounds. It is proposed thatthe metal ions in these complexes are located indistorted-octahedral (six-coordinated) or square-pyramidal (five-coordinated) geometries and the twopendant arms approach the metal ion at the opposite side of the macrocycle.
