European producers of uncoated woodfree papers are attempting to counter the recent bout of downward pressure on prices by pushing for hikes. Portucel, Sappi Europe and Metsa Board are among manufacturers seeking to raise prices from next month. Whether the move is achievable given a market that is readily supplied and with not insignificant levels of competitively priced imports remains to be seen. The move is surely also designed to bring a halt to the recent erosion in prices.
