North American newsprint producer AbitibiBowater has filed for bankruptcy protection following the collapse of a debt restructuring deal. In the bankruptcy petition, the company said it had debts of C$8.8bn as of 30 September 2008. Its assets were believed to be worth US$8.1bn at the end of last year.
