The inhibitory effect of condensed liquid derived from sweet potato shochu distillerry waste (SSDW) on the growth of upland weeds (Digitaria ciliaris and Amaranthus patulus [A. cruentus]) was studied. After sowing weed seeds in pots, SSDW at various rates (0, 80, 160, 400 and 800 ml/m2) was applied to the soil surface. At 28 days after SSDW application, the emergence of D. ciliaris and A. patulus was significantly reduced by 800 ml SSDW/m2 (70 and 44% reduction, respectively). Some seedlings of A. patulus died after emergence. The inhibitory effect on weed emergence appeared to decrease with time. The growth of weed seedlings increased as the rate of SSDW increased. SSDW had less effect on weed emergence than synthesized herbicides.
