Increasing worldwide demand for transportation fuels is driving efforts to develop new,renewable sources of these fuels based on biological raw materials.This work explores the technical and economic potential for gasification-based biorefining at kraft pulp and paper mills in the United States.Together with the authors'earlier study(2003)on gasification-based power generation at kraft pulp and paper mills in the United States,this research makes possible an assessment of the relative prospects for power vs.liquid fuels production.
