A sting operation in Manchester city centre has resulted in a 40% reduction in car crimes over a three month period. Operation Bulldog was a joint operation by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Manchester City Council and National Car Parks (NCP). While overall levels of vehicle crime are reducing in Manchester, there had been an increase in thefts of high-end electronics - especially satellite navigation aids - from vehicles in some central Manchester car park sites. To combat this trend, Operation Bulldog employed new tactics such as "bait vehicles". These are being used in conjunction with a number of other intelligence gathering and policing techniques, including DNA evidence, CCTV footage, and plain-clothes officers.
